About us

The Film + Media Arts Coalition is a dynamic initiative that takes action to promote the growth and development of film and media arts in Hawaiʻi. The coalition's primary mission is to support and advance the work of local independent filmmakers and media artists, while encouraging the creation of new and innovative works that challenge and inspire audiences.

The coalition offers its members various services and resources, including networking opportunities, access to funding and grants, educational programs and workshops, and advocacy for policies and legislation supporting the film and media arts community.

The coalition works tirelessly to raise public awareness about the importance of film and media arts as a cultural and educational resource, and seeks to promote the role of independent filmmakers and media artists in shaping public discourse and understanding of critical issues.

The Film + Media Arts Coalition is an essential organization that serves as a necessary resource and support system for those working in the film and media arts community, and helps to ensure that this important form of artistic expression continues to thrive and flourish in Hawaiʻi.

Launched in December 2023, HIFMAC is a growing ecosystem/initiative of more than x individuals representing local stakeholders across Hawaiʻi, including artists and collectives, film and media arts organizations, film festivals, art house cinemas, cultural institutions, content distributors, broadcast entities, arts service organizations, and funders.

Membership includes individual filmmakers and organizations dedicated to strengthening support networks for the independent film and media arts field through knowledge exchange and peer learning, with a focus on equity and career sustainability.

Hawaiʻi Women in Filmmaking is currently leading this place-based field-building initiative and is in need of advisors in critical areas of independent media programming. These areas include community media, independent filmmaking, youth and emerging education, independent exhibition, media preservation, and workforce development, among others. Our goal is to create better connections among independent media organization networks, so that collectively, we can offer more equitable educational and career-sustaining opportunities, inspire more creative collaborations, and share best practices and business models. We aim to help organizations serve their media arts constituents more effectively, strengthen regional cooperation, and maintain healthy nonprofits and programs.
